Gehl 5625SX Skid Steer Troubleshooting

The Gehl 5625 SX skid steer loader is powered by 152 cu.in (2.5L) Perkins 204.25 four-cylinder liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 56 hp (42 kW) at 2700 rpm. The Gehl 5625SX is equipped with a single-speed hydrostatic transmission, radial-lift loader boom, 80HE roller chains, and 12x16.5 or 31-15.5x15 tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 21 gpm (79.5 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 3000 psi (207 bar). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 1700 lbs (770 kg) and tipping load of 3400 lbs (1540 kg). The maximum lift height is 119 inches (3025 mm) to hinge pin, and dump height is 94 inches (2390 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts hard or doesn't start

Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Clogged fuel filter - Replace filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged or dirty - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Rebuild or change fuel pump.

Diesel starts but stalls suddenly

Dirty air filter - Install new air filter element.
Fuel filter element clogging - Change or clean the filter element.
Fuel injection pump is leaking - Repair any leaks.
Dirty or defective injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Fuel injection pump damage - Replace or repair injection pump.

Engine stops running suddenly

Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up the engine.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Service or replace the filter.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust the pump as required.

Engine stalls when idling

Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Replace injection pump or repair it.
Dirty or defective injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Have it adjusted.

Engine loses power

Clogged air cleaner - Service or replace air cleaner.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Clean or replace injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Adjust to proper pressure.
Excessive valve clearance - Correct valve clearance.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Normalize low idle speed.
Dirt in the fuel hoses or lines - Clean fuel hoses and lines.
Defective cylinder head gasket - Gasket should be replaced.
Piston rings are leaking or defective - Replace piston rings.

Engine overheats

Lack of coolant in cooling system - Fill radiator to proper level and check components for faults.
Insufficient engine oil - Need to add engine oil.
Clogged radiator core or leaking radiator cap - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Damaged or worn fan belt - If necessary, replace the belt.
Diesel engine is overloaded - Load reducing required.

Oil pressure is insufficient

Oil level is low - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Dirty oil filter - Change or service engine oil filter.
Incorrect oil viscosity - Drain and refill with oil of correct grade and viscosity.
Excessive main bearing oil clearance - Replace bearings.
Oil pump is damaged - Replace as required.

Engine knocking or noise

Insufficient engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Low coolant temperature - Warm up the engine.
Improper fuel injection timing - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Incorrect low idle setting - Test and adjust.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Machine is not moving in one direction or either direction

Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Check and refill the hydraulic fluid.
Drive chain malfunction - Inspect drive chain and replace defective parts.
Input drive shaft malfunction - Drive shaft need to be replaced or repair.
Worn or damaged relief valve - Service or change relief valve.
Plugged suction line or hydraulic filter - Check, clean, or change if necessary.
Foot or hand controls are damaged - Change or repair.
Drive motor or pump failure - Inspect and replace as necessary.

Low power

Plugged hydraulic oil filter - Replace hydraulic filter.
Worn or open relief valve - Change or close relief valve.
Worn or defective transmission parts - Inspect and change faulty parts.
Input drive shaft is defective - Rebuild or change the shaft.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Air bleeding is required.

Drive system overheats

Insufficient hydraulic oil - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Plugged hydraulic fluid filter - Change or clean hydraulic filter.
Relief valve is damaged or worn - Repair or replace.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor malfunction - Replace or repair faulty component.
Dirty oil cooler - Cooling fins should be cleaned.

Excessive noise

Wrong oil viscosity - Drain and refill with proper oil.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.

Worn or damaged mechanical components of drive system - Inspect the components for worn or defect and repair as required.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system has overheating

Hydraulic pressure is incorrect - Adjust it correctly.
Main relief valve is damaged or adjusted improperly - Adjust or replace the relief valve.
Contaminated hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil.
Not enough hydraulic oil in the system - Fill the hydraulic system with oil.

Lift arm won't raise or lower

Bucket or boom is moving jerkily

Air in the hydraulic system - Need to bleed air.
Hydraulic oil filter is dirty - Clean or install new filter.
Hydraulic oil contamination - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Cylinder rod or tube is scratched - Change failed component.

Hydraulic pump is noisy

Leaking hydraulic system or insufficient oil level - Repair hydraulic leaks or add oil as required.
Hydraulic filter clogging - Service or change hydraulic filter.
Clogged suction line - Suction line needs to be cleaned.
Pump is sucking air - Bleed air from hydraulics.
Pump components are faulty - Install new hydraulic pump or rebuild it.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery won’t charge

Corroded or loose cable connections - Tighten or clean connections.
Battery terminal clamps are defective - Change terminal clamps.
Dead cell in battery - Battery change required.
Loose or defective belt - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter cranks slowly

Low battery output - Charge the battery.
Battery won’t hold charge - Service charging system or change battery.
Disconnected wiring or bad battery terminals - Connect wiring properly or install new terminals.

Starter will not work

Battery is drained or defective - Battery needs to be recharged or replaced.
Battery wires are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wires and connect correctly.
Battery voltage is low - Battery is drained, charge it.
Defective starter motor - Starter needs to be replaced.
