bushings for wear. Replace parts if necessary. Inspect differential
carrier-to-case thrust surface for wear. If case thrust surface is worn
more than 1.02 mm (0.040 in.), replace case.
John Deere 165, 175, 185 Tractor - Assemble Peerless differential and
axle
Lubricate all parts with SAE 90 oil during assembly. Install
washers, carrier, washer and gear on both axles. Install snap ring.
Install pinion gears and pinion blocks on shaft. Install pinion assembly
into ring gear. Install assembled ring gear between axles. Install and
tighten cap screws to 9.5 Nm (84 lb-in.). Assemble differential - When
installing differential and axle assembly, be careful not to damage seal
in axle housing. Install differential and axle assembly. Install gear on
shaft with chamfered side of internal spline towards the shaft. Install
output gear on ground shaft using a plastic hammer. Install spacer and
thrust washer on output shaft. Install output shaft assembly. Assemble
brake shaft. Install brake shaft assembly by putting rear thrust washer
into position first. New differential cases have untapped bolt holes.
Use the self-tapping cap screws when assembling. Install new gasket and
cover. Tighten cap screws to 11 Nm (97 lb-in.). Install brake assembly.
Install Peerless hydrostatic differential - Install transmission on
hydrostatic differential. Remove fill plug. Add 0.7 L (1.5 pt) of SAE 90
oil to differential. Check for leaks. Install differential and
transmission assembly on tractor.
Kanzaki hydrostatic differential (JD 185 tractor)
Separate differential and transmission
Clean transaxle assembly and
drain oil. Remove items. Disassemble Kanzaki transmission - Remove cover
and idler gear assembly. Measure idler gear and idler shaft. Idler Gear
I.D - 21.01-21.03 mm (0.827-0.828 in.). Idler Shaft O.D 16.99-17.00 mm
(0.668-0.669 in.). Remove motor gear assembly and brake assembly.
Measure brake components. Cam Lever Shaft O.D - 19.97-20.03 mm
(0.786-0.788 in.). Cam Lever Shaft: Bore I.D. (Cover) - 20.10-20.20 mm
(0.791-0.795 in.), Bore I.D. (Housing) - 20.05-20.08 mm (0.789-0.790
in.). Actuator (includes ball) - 9.10-9.30 mm (0.358-0.366 in.). Disc -
1.90-2.10 mm (0.075-0.083 in.). Plate - 2.40-2.60 mm (0.094-0.102 in.).
Remove left and right axle assemblies. Measure axle housings. Axle
Housing O.D. (Needle Bearing) - 24.98-25.00 mm (0.983-0.984 in.). Remove
pinion drive assembly. Measure counter gear and pinion drive. Counter
Gear I.D - 20.01-20.03 mm (0.788-0.789 in.). Pinion Drive O.D -
20.00-20.02 mm (0.78-0.79 in.). Remove differential assembly. Measure
pinion shaft, pinion gear and differential case. Pinion Shaft O.D -
13.97-13.98 mm (0.549-0.550 in.). Pinion Gear I.D - 14.03-14.05 mm
(0.552-0.553 in.). Differential Case I.D. (Axle) - 20.08-20.10 mm
(0.79-0.791 in.).
John Deere 185 Tractor - Assemble differential
Clean screw threads using clean
and cure primer. Apply thread lock and sealer (medium strength) on cap
screw threads. Assemble differential assembly. Tighten cap screws to 26
Nm (230 lb-in.). Ring gear to pinion drive gear backlash must be checked
after pinion drive assembly and axles are installed. Assemble pinion
drive assembly (except items C, K and L). New differential cases have
untapped bolt holes. Use the higher torque when installing tapping
bolts. Tighten tapping bolts to: New Case - 29 Nm (260 lb-in.), Used
Case - 25 Nm (221 lb-in.). Assemble and install left and right axle
assemblies. Tighten tapping bolts. When checking backlash, hold axles
and differential assembly solid. Measure ring gear to pinion drive gear
backlash at key groove. Backlash specification is 0.15—0.30 mm
(0.006—0.012 in.). Adjust backlash by adding or subtracting left axle
shaft shims. Install brake assembly and motor gear assembly. Tighten
tapping bolts. Assemble idler gear assembly. Oil grooves in idler gear
go toward cover. Apply flexible sealant or an equivalent on gasket
surface of the differential cover and case. Install cover and tapping
bolts. Assemble Kanzaki differential and transmission - Install items.
Tighten drain plug to 15 Nm (130 lb-in.). After installing the complete
transaxle into the machine, bleed the hydrostatic system.

Separate Sundstrand differential and transmission
Clean transaxle
assembly and drain oil. Remove items. Disassemble transmission - Remove
center section from transmission housing assembly. Remove gasket. Remove
items from center section. Do not nick or scratch lapped surface of
cylinder blocks. Piston-to-bore relationship need not be maintained;
keep pump and motor components separate, they are not interchangeable.
Remove motor cylinder block and shaft assembly from the housing
assembly. Remove pump cylinder block and shaft assembly. Remove items
from housing assembly. Assemble Sundstrand transmission (JD 185 tractor)
- Install items into housing assembly. Install pump cylinder block and
shaft assembly into the housing assembly. Install motor cylinder block
and shaft assembly. Install items into center section. Install new
gasket. Install center section onto transmission housing assembly.
Tighten cap screws to 17 Nm (150 lb-in.).
John Deere 185 Tractor - Assemble differential and transmission
Install items. Tighten drain plug to 15 Nm (130 lb-in.). After installing the complete transaxle into the machine, bleed the hydrostatic system. Bleed hydrostatic system - After installing a repaired or replacement part, follow this run-in procedure to assure that air is purged from the system. Fill case and reservoir to FULL line. Transmission oil capacity is approximately 850 cc (28.7 fl oz). Lift rear wheels off ground using hoist. Put jackstands under frame. Start engine and idle it for two or three minutes. Apply full forward for 10 seconds. Bring to NEUTRAL for five seconds. Push tow (bleed) valve for two seconds. Apply full forward for 15 seconds. Stop engine. Fill reservoir to FULL line. Start engine and idle it. Put Sundstrand transmission in NEUTRAL for 10 seconds. Apply full forward for 10 seconds and return to NEUTRAL. Stop engine. Fill reservoir to FULL line.
