New Holland C185 Track Loader Troubleshooting

The New Holland C185 compact track loader is powered by 195 cu.in (3.2L) FPT F5C E5454 four-cylinder turbocharged liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 77 hp (57 kW) at 2500 rpm. The New Holland C185 is equipped with a two-speed hydrostatic transmission, hydraulic disc brakes, and steel-embedded rubber tracks. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 21 gpm (79.6 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 3050 psi (210 bar). The compact track loader has a rated operating capacity of 2550 lbs (1155 kg) and tipping load of 7290 lbs (3300 kg). The lift height is 128.3 inches (3255 mm) to hinge pin, and dump height is 103.4 inches (2625 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or won't start

Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Fuel filter plugging - Service or replace the filter.

Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.

Diesel starts but stalls suddenly

Fuel filter plugging - Service or replace the filter.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Clogged or defective injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Repair or change injection pump.

Engine stops unexpectedly during operation

Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Warm up engine as required.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Change filter element.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.

Engine shuts off while idling

Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Fuel injection pump is not operating properly - Rebuild or replace pump.
Dirty or defective injectors - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Valve clearance is wrong - Need to adjust valve clearance.

Diesel power loss

Air filter is clogged - Service or replace the air filter.
Faulty fuel injection nozzles - Replace injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Adjust to correct pressure.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Adjustment procedure required.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Need to adjust idle speed.

Engine overheated

Insufficient coolant - Top up coolant fluid and check system for leaks.

Radiator fins are clogged or radiator cap is faulty - Change cap or clean radiator.
Fan belt is loose or defective - The fan belt needs to be replaced.
Engine is under excessive load - Load reducing required.

Insufficient oil pressure

Engine oil level low - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Oil filter element is dirty - Replace or clean engine oil filter element.
Incorrect engine oil Use oil of correct viscosity.
Excessive crankshaft bearing oil clearance - Bearing needs to be changed.
Oil pump is damaged - Install a new pump.

Abnormal engine knocking or noise

Not enough engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Engine not warmed up - Warm up engine as required.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Correct the settings.
Fuel injector fault - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Connecting rod is not aligned or defective - Connecting rod must be aligned or replaced.

Machine will not move forward or backward

Machine will not move straight or moves jerkily

Track mechanism is defective or jammed - Remove jamming or repair tracks.
Sagging or worn tracks - Repair tracks or correct track sag with tension.
Undercarriage track frame is clogged with dirt or foreign objects - Remove foreign objects or clean track frame.

Loss of power

Dirty hydraulic oil filter - Change hydraulic filter.
Worn or open relief valve - Close or replace relief valve.
Transmission components are damaged or faulty - Check and replace defective components.
Input drive shaft is worn - Replace or service the drive shaft.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Air bleeding is required.

Drive system overheating

Hydraulic oil level is low - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Check, clean, or change as necessary.
Relief valve is defective - Repair or install a new relief valve.
Damaged drive pump or hydraulic motor - Repair or change faulty component.
Clogged hydraulic oil cooler - Cooling fins need to be cleaned.

Drive system makes excessive noise

Oil viscosity is incorrect - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system is overheated

Hydraulic pressure is not adjusted correctly - Adjust pressure correctly.

Hydraulic pump is noisy

Hydraulic leakage or lack of oil - Remedy hydraulic leakage or refill oil as necessary.
Dirty hydraulic filter - Service or replace hydraulic filter.
Clogged suction line - Need to service the suction line.
Air in hydraulic pump - Need to bleed air.
Pump parts are faulty - Install new hydraulic pump or rebuild it.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery will not charge

Electrical cable connections are loose or corroded - Clean or tighten wiring connections.
Defective battery terminal clamps - Terminal clamps should be changed.
Battery is defective - Change the battery.
Belt is worn or loose - Change belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter turning slow

Low battery output voltage - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Battery will not hold charge - Service battery or replace it.
Bad terminals or disconnected battery cables - Connect wiring correctly or install new terminals.

Starter will not crank

Battery is drained or worn - Replace or charge as required.
Disconnected or improperly connected wiring harness - Inspect battery wiring harness and connect as required.
Low battery power - Battery is drained, charge it.
Defective starter motor - Starter needs to be changed.
