Kubota L4240 Engine Troubleshooting

Diesel engine hard to start or doesn't start: Clogged fuel filter. Replace the filter element. Air in the fuel pipes. Bleed the fuel pipes. Dirty or damaged injection nozzles. Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary. Defective fuel injection pump. Repair or replace injection pump.

Engine stops unexpectedly during operation: Improper fuel injection timing. Set it up as required. Fuel filter plugged. Filter maintenance required. Coolant temperature is low. Warm up the engine.

Engine starts but then stalls: Clogged fuel filter. Clean the filter or install new filter element. Defective fuel injection pump. Repair or install new pump. Clogged air cleaner. Change air filter element.

Engine is overheated: Radiator fins are dirty or radiator cap is defective. Replace cap or clean radiator. Coolant level is low. Top up coolant fluid and check system for leaks. Fan belt is loose or defective. Fan belt must be replaced. Engine oil insufficient. Add oil to the engine crankcase.

Lack of engine power: Dirty or faulty injection nozzles. Check injection nozzles and replace if required. Fuel lines or hoses are clogged. Fuel hoses and lines must be clean. Air cleaner is dirty. Air filter maintenance required. Cylinder head gasket is worn. Change cylinder head gasket.

Engine noises or knocks: Engine is not preheated. Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine. Engine oil level low. Add oil to the engine crankcase. Hydrostatic transmission noise: Speed control linkage is worn or unadjusted. Adjust or repair linkage. Excessive loading. The load should be reduced. Transmission oil is contaminated or oil level is insufficient. Add oil to the correct level or fill the transmission with fresh oil. Defective relief valve. Replace relief valve as required. Worn or defective parts of the hydrostatic transmission. After disassembly and inspection, replace defective components.

Hot transmission oil: Transmission overloaded. The load should be reduced. Cooling components are defective or plugged. Inspect all cooling components and replace or clean if necessary. Insufficient transmission fluid. Check and refill the transmission fluid. Transmission oil filter is dirty. Service or change transmission oil filter.

Power is insufficient: Lack of transmission fluid. Need to add transmission fluid. Relief valve is damaged. Replace the valve. Bent or unadjusted speed control pedal linkage. Change or adjust linkage.

Transmission fluid leakage: Oil drain line is clogged. Clean or change the line. Damaged gaskets or seals. Replace worn seal or gaskets. Transmission case internal pressure is too high. Change defective components.
