John Deere 328D Skid Steer Troubleshooting

The John Deere 328D skid steer loader driveline system components: a 186 cu.in (3.L) JD PowerTech E 5030HT 5-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 80 hp (59.6 kW), and 2-speed hydro transmission. The hydraulic system has a standard pump with a rated capacity of 21 gal/min (80 l/min). The system relief pressure is 3450 psi (238 bar). The John Deere 328D is equipped with vertical-lift loader boom, 100 HD drive chains, and 14x17.5 tires. The skid steer loader has a maximum lift height of 127.1" (3230 mm) to hinge pin and dump height of 101.2" (2570 mm). The rated operating capacity is 2800 lbs (1270 kg), and tipping load is 5600 lbs (2540 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine hard to start or will not start

Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Fuel filter plugged - Replace the filter element.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Replace injection nozzles.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Have it adjusted.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Rebuild or install a new injection pump.

Diesel starts but stalls suddenly

Clogged air cleaner - Clean or change.
Fuel filter plugging - Change the filter element.
Poor fuel injection pump tightness - Look for any leaks of fuel pump, tighten it fast.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump failure - Replace or repair injection pump.

Engine stalls while running

Engine is not preheated - Warm up to required temperature.
Fuel filter plugging - Replace filter element.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust according to specifications.

Engine stops when idle

Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel injection pump failure - Repair or install a new fuel pump.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Improper valve clearance - Correct valve clearance.

Loss of engine power

Clogged air cleaner - Clean or replace element.

Engine overheats

Oil pressure is low

Coolant temperature is low - Warm up to required temperature.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.
Incorrect low idle setting - Adjust the low idle speed.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Connecting rod is defective or not aligned - Alignment procedure or replacement is required.

Machine will not move forward or backward

Drive system keeps overheating

Battery will not charge

Battery terminal clamps are faulty - Install new terminal clamps.
Faulty cell in battery - Battery change required.
Loose or defective belt - Need to adjust belt tension or replace belt.

Starter cranks slowly

Low battery voltage - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery does not hold charge - Service charging system or replace battery.
Bad battery terminals or disconnected wiring - Check cable connections and change or clean terminals.

Starter does not work

Battery is discharged or defective - Battery needs to be recharged or replaced.
