New Holland LS140 Skid Steer Troubleshooting

The New Holland LS140 skid steer loader is powered by 91.3 cubic inches (1.5L) Shibaura N843 3-cylinder indirect injection liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 32 hp (23.6 kW) at 2900 rpm. The New Holland LS140 is equipped with a single-speed hydrostatic transmission, 50/80 HD roller chains, and 10x16.5 standard tires. The hydraulic system has a pump with fluid flow rate of 10.8 gpm (40.9 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 2600 psi (177 bar). The skid steer loader has a rated operating capacity of 1380 lbs (625 kg) and tipping load of 2760 lbs (1250 kg). The boom lifting force is 2020 lbs (915 kg), and bucket breakout force is 3405 lbs (1545 kg).

Engine Troubleshooting

Engine difficult to start or will not start

Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel filter plugged - Clean the filter element.
Burnt or clogged injection nozzle - Replace injection nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Correct valve clearance.

Diesel starts and stalls immediately

Air filter is clogged - Install new air filter element.

Poor fuel injection pump tightness - Look for any leaks of fuel pump, tighten it fast.
Dirty or defective injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Replacement or repair required.

Engine stops running suddenly

Low coolant temperature - Warm up engine as required.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Clean or replace the filter.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.

Engine stalls at idle

Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Adjust the low idle speed.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Replacement or repair required.
Fuel injector fault - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.

Loss of engine power

Plugged air filter - Replace or clean air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Incorrect fuel injection pressure - Adjust to correct pressure.
Valve out of adjustment - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Correct low idle settings.
Restricted fuel lines or hoses - Clean fuel lines and hoses.

Engine overheated

Lack of engine coolant - Refill to the correct level and inspect system for leaks.

Engine is overloaded - Reduce engine load.

Oil pressure is low

Oil filter element clogging - Service or change engine oil filter element.
Oil grade or viscosity is incorrect - Use oil of proper viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing oil clearance is incorrect - Bearing replacement required.

Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise

Lack of engine oil - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Engine is not preheated - Warm up the engine.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Set it up as required.
Too low idle RPM - Adjust as required.
Clogged or defective injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.

Drive System Troubleshooting

Drive system does not work in either direction

Hydraulic fluid level low - Add fluid as required.
Drive chain is worn - Inspect drive chain and replace faulty components.
Input drive shaft is worn - Service or change drive shaft.
Relief valve defective or worn - Relief valve need to be replaced or repair.
Plugged suction line or hydraulic filter - Service suction line or replace hydraulic filter.
Foot or hand controls are damaged - Repair or replace.
Drive motor or pump failure - Replace or repair faulty component.

Loss of power

Clogged hydraulic oil filter - Change or service hydraulic filter.
Opened or worn relief valve - Close or replace relief valve.
Faulty or worn transmission components - Check and replace faulty components.
Input drive shaft is worn - Service or change faulty drive shaft.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.

Drive system overheats

Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Hydraulic fluid filter is dirty - Change or clean hydraulic filter.
Relief valve failure - Repair or replace.
Drive pump or hydraulic motor is damaged - Check and repair if required.
Oil cooler is clogged - Cooling fins need to be cleaned.
Drive system overload - Reduce loading.

Excessive noise

Incorrect oil viscosity - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.
Worn hydraulic motor or drive pump - Repair or replace faulty component.
Mechanical components of drive system are damaged - Inspect the components and repair as needed.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheated

Hydraulic pressure incorrectly adjusted - Adjust it correctly.
Unadjusted or defective main relief valve - Adjust the valve or replace if necessary.
Hydraulic fluid is contaminated - The fluid must be changed.
Lack of hydraulic oil - Fill up the hydraulic oil.

Excessive hydraulic pump noise

Air enters the pump - Need to bleed air.

Electrical Troubleshooting

Battery does not charge

Electrical wire connections are loose or corroded - Clean or tighten connections.
Electrical terminal connectors are faulty - Change terminal connectors.
Bad cell in battery - Change the battery.
Loose or damaged belt - Replace belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter turns slow

Low battery output voltage - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Battery is draining quickly - Service battery or replace it.
Battery cables are disconnected or terminals are faulty - Check battery wires and service or replace terminals.

Starter motor is not working

Battery is discharged or defective - Charge or change the battery.
Wiring harness is disconnected or improperly connected - Check wiring harness and connect as required.
Low battery output - Battery needs to be recharged.
Starter motor failing - Starter should be replaced.
