New Holland T4040 Diesel Engine Troubleshooting

Engine starts hard or will not start: Fuel filter element is clogged. Service or replace the filter. Air in fuel system. Bleed fuel system. Dirty or faulty injection nozzles. Check injection nozzles and replace if required. Fuel injection pump damage. Change pump or rebuild it.

Engine stalls during operation: Fuel injection pump timing is wrong. Adjust as recommended. Fuel filter plugged. Clean the filter element. Engine is cold. Warm up the engine.

Diesel starts but stalls immediately: Fuel filter plugging. Change the filter element. Fuel injection pump is not working correctly. Rebuild or change fuel pump. Plugged air cleaner. Clean or replace element.

Engine overheating: Dirty radiator fins or faulty radiator cap. Install new cap or clean radiator. Insufficient coolant fluid. Top up coolant fluid and check system for leaks. Broken or loose fan belt. If necessary, replace the belt. Engine oil level is low. Fill up the engine oil.

Reduced engine power: Dirty or damaged injection nozzles. Test injection nozzles and change if necessary. Clogged fuel lines or hoses. Service fuel hoses and lines. Plugged air cleaner. Change air filter element. Defective cylinder head gasket. Gasket should be replaced.

Abnormal engine knocking or noise: Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature. Warm up the engine. Not enough engine oil. Fill up the engine oil. Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing. Adjust the pump as required. Piston wear or scoring. Have pistons replaced. Connecting rod misalignment or failure. Need to align or replace the connecting rod.

Engine stalls at low idle speed: Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed. Correct the settings. The valve clearance is incorrect. Correct valve clearance needs to be set. Fuel injection pump failure. Rebuild or replace pump.

Oil pressure is low: Insufficient engine oil. Fill up the engine oil. Oil pump is damaged. Repair or change. Oil filter element is dirty. Service or change engine oil filter element.

Transmission is making noise: Damaged gears or incorrect backlash. Change the gears or set backlash properly. Worn or bent shift forks. Shift forks need to be changed. Shaft splines are stuck or worn out. Shaft need to be replaced. Insufficient transmission oil. Check transmission oil level and add oil as required. Worn or damaged bearings. Bearings replacement required. Transmission oil is contaminated. Transmission oil change required.

Gear shift is hard: Corroded or worn gear shift linkage. Lubricate or replace the shift linkage. Unadjusted or worn clutch. Adjust or install new clutch. Worn or bent shift forks. Change the shift forks. Gearshift mechanism is damaged. Replace or repair the mechanism.

Transmission oil pressure is insufficient: Transmission oil insufficient. Check transmission oil level and add oil as required. Transmission oil filter is clogged (if fitted). Clean or change transmission oil filter. Defective relief valve. Change the valve.

Transmission oil leakage: Seals or gaskets are worn. Change defective gaskets or seal. Transmission fluid level is high. Correct the fluid level.

Hydraulic system is overheated: Improper hydraulic fluid type. Use the proper type of hydraulic fluid. Contaminated hydraulic fluid. Change hydraulic fluid. Air trapped in hydraulic system. Bleed air from system. Main relief valve is faulty. Change relief valve.

Hydraulic oil pressure too low: Hydraulic fluid is insufficient. Add fluid as required. Dirty hydraulic fluid filter. Clean the hydraulic filter element or replace if necessary. Hydraulic piping is leaking. Check the system and repair leaks. Incorrect setting hydraulic spool valve. Use the correct setting. Hydraulic pump failure. Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump. Battery will not charge: Loose or corroded cable connections. Clean or tighten connections. Battery terminal clamps are defective. Terminal clamps should be changed. Battery is worn. Battery change required. Worn or loose belt. Adjust belt tension or install a new belt.

Starter turns slowly: Low battery output voltage. Low battery charging, charge as required. Battery runs out quickly. Service battery or change it. Bad terminals or disconnected battery cables. Check cables and service or change terminals.
