Diesel shuts off while driving: Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted. Adjust fuel injection pump as required. Fuel filter plugging. Clean or replace the filter. Coolant temperature is low. Warm up the engine.

Engine starts but then stops: Clogged fuel filter. Replace the filter element. Fuel injection pump is faulty. Repair or change injection pump. Restricted intake air. Clean or change.

Engine overheating: Radiator core is dirty or radiator cap is damaged. Install new cap or clean radiator. Engine has a lack of coolant. Add coolant fluid to cooling system and also check it for leaks. Excessive wear of the fan belt. Replace the fan belt. Not enough engine oil. Fill up the oil to required level.

Reduced engine power: Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged. Replace injection nozzles. Dirty fuel lines or hoses. Fuel lines and hoses need to be cleaned. Air filter plugged. Clean or replace element. Cylinder head gasket defective. Cylinder-head gasket replacement required.

Engine noise or knocking: Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature. Warm up the engine. Low engine oil level. Check oil level and add oil as required. Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted. Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment. Worn or broken pistons. Pistons replacement required. Connecting rod is worn or misaligned. Alignment procedure or replacement is required.

Engine stalls when idling: Incorrect low idle speed adjustment. Correct low idle adjustment. Valve out of adjustment. Adjustment procedure required. Defective fuel injection pump. Install a new fuel pump or repair.

Insufficient oil pressure: Lack of oil. Need to add oil. Defective oil pump. Remove and inspect oil pump. Dirty oil filter. Clean or change engine oil filter.

Ford 1600 Transmission Troubleshooting

Transmission makes noise: Gears are defective or backlash is improper. Replace defective gears or set backlash properly. Worn or damaged gear shift forks. Install new shift forks. Shaft splines are worn or stuck. Replace defective shaft. Lack of transmission fluid. Add fluid to the transmission housing. Worn or cracked bearings. Replace faulty bearings. Transmission fluid is dirty. Change the fluid.

Hard to shift gears: Gear shift linkage is worn or rusty. Install a new gear shift linkage. Unadjusted or worn clutch. Clutch replacement or adjustment required. Damaged or worn gear shift forks. Shift forks need to be changed. Worn parts of the gear shifting mechanism. Change worn parts.

Insufficient transmission oil pressure: Insufficient transmission fluid. Add fluid to the transmission housing. Transmission oil filter is dirty (if equipped). Service or replace the transmission oil filter. Stuck relief valve. Replace relief valve as required.

External oil leaks: Seals or gaskets are worn. Install new gaskets or seal. Too much oil in transmission. Drain the excess oil.

Ford 1600 Hydraulic System Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system overheats: Hydraulic fluid type is improper. The proper type of fluid must be used. Contaminated hydraulic oil. Change hydraulic oil. Air in hydraulic lines. Bleed hydraulic lines. Main relief valve malfunctioning. Relief valve must be changed.

Low hydraulic system pressure: Hydraulic fluid level low. Fill up the hydraulic fluid. Clogged hydraulic oil filter element. Install a new hydraulic filter element. Hydraulic piping is leaking. Check the hydraulic system and fix leaks. Not adjusted hydraulic control valve. Need to adjust. Hydraulic pump not working. Install a new hydraulic oil pump. Damaged hydraulic cylinder. Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.

Three-point hitch cannot be lifted or lifting is too slow: Hydraulic pump failure. Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump. Faulty main relief valve. Change relief valve. Faulty hydraulic control valve. Repair or replace hydraulic valve. Hydraulic cylinder not working. Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder. Low hydraulic fluid level. Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level. Dirty hydraulic fluid filter element. Clean or replace the hydraulic filter. Excessive hitch loading. The load should be reduced.

3-point hitch can't drop or drops too slowly: Damaged hydraulic cylinder. Change or repair hydraulic cylinder. Incorrect setting hydraulic control valve block. Set correctly. Lift arm shaft is worn. Change the shaft. Misadjusted hitch. Adjust the 3-point hitch.

3-point hitch jerks when lower or lift: Hydraulic oil contamination. Change the oil. Hydraulic pump malfunction. Install a new hydraulic fluid pump. Air in the hydraulic system. Air bleeding. Hydraulic control valve is faulty. Repair or replace hydraulic valve. Hydraulic cylinder not working. Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.

Ford 1600 Steering System Troubleshooting

Excessive steering wheel play: Steering column bearing or shaft is worn. Replace defective components. Steering linkage joints are worn or loose. Change or repair steering linkage. Worn steering gearbox bearings. Change the bearings. Find faulty parts and change as required.

Difficult steering: Steering column shaft or steering knuckle sticking. Inspect steering column and knuckle, replace worn parts as required. Damaged steering gear box parts. Replace defective parts of steering box. Drag link or tie rod failure. Replace or rebuild. Low oil level in steering gearbox. Check and refill steering oil. Incorrect toe-in. Tires are not correctly inflated. Inflate tires as necessary.

Front wheels wander to left or right: Steering linkage joints are worn or loose. Repair or change steering linkage. Damaged steering knuckle bushing. Change knuckle bushing. Front tires are worn unevenly. Install new tires. Incorrect toe-in. Check and adjust toe-in.

Ford 1600 Electrical System Troubleshooting

Battery does not charge: Corroded or loose electrical wire connections. Tighten or service cable connections. Faulty battery terminal clamps. Replace terminal clamps. Worn-out battery. Change the battery. Belt is defective or loose. Change belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter cranks slowly: Low battery voltage. Battery is drained, recharge it. Battery discharges quickly. Service battery or replace it. Terminals are faulty or battery cables are disconnected. Check cable connections and replace or service terminals.

Starter doesn't crank: Battery is low or faulty. Recharge or replace battery. Wiring harness is disconnected or improperly connected. Check wiring harness and connect as required. Low battery capacity. Battery is drained, recharge it. Starter motor failing. Starter should be replaced.
