Ford 1920 Engine Troubleshooting

Engine difficult to start or won't start: Fuel filter element is clogged. Install new filter element. Air in the fuel system. Air bleeding. Defective injection nozzle. Test injection nozzles and change if necessary. Fuel injection pump is broken. Change or repair the pump.

Engine stops unexpectedly during operation: Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing. Set the fuel pump timing correctly. Fuel filter plugging. Filter maintenance required. Low coolant temperature. Warm up engine as required.

Engine starts but stalls suddenly: Fuel filter plugging. Change filter element. Fuel injection pump malfunction. Rebuild or replace pump. Restricted intake air. Carry out maintenance on air filter.

Engine overheated: Clogged radiator fins or leaking radiator cap. Clean radiator or change cap. Low coolant level. Add coolant fluid to cooling system and also check it for leaks. Fan belt slipping or worn. Replace as required. Engine oil level is low. Check and refill engine oil.

Diesel power loss: Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged. Replace injection nozzles. Restricted fuel hoses or lines. Service fuel hoses and lines. Plugged air filter. Clean or replace element. Cylinder head gasket is defective. Install new cylinder head gasket.

Engine knocks or noises: Engine not warmed up. Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature. Engine oil level low. Check and refill engine oil. Fuel injection pump timing is wrong. Adjust fuel injection pump as required. Pistons are broken or worn. Replace the pistons. Faulty or misaligned connecting rod. Need to replace or align the connecting rod.

Engine stops when idle: Low idle speed setting is not correct. Normalize low idle speed. Valve clearance is wrong. Correct valve clearance needs to be set. Fuel injection pump damage. Change pump or rebuild it.

Oil pressure too low: Lack of oil. Checking oil level and add if necessary. Oil pump is defective. Remove and inspect oil pump. Dirty oil filter. Change or service engine oil filter.

Ford 1920 Transmission Troubleshooting

Transmission makes excessive noise: Defective gears or improper backlash. Install new gears and adjust backlash properly. Worn or bent gear shift forks. Change defective shift forks. Stuck or worn shaft splines. Install a new shaft. Low fluid level. Add fluid to the transmission housing. Worn or cracked bearings. Bearings need to be replaced. Transmission oil is dirty. Transmission oil change required.

Hard to shift gears: Gear shift linkage is corroded or worn. Install a new gear shift linkage. Improperly adjusted or worn clutch. Clutch adjustment or replacement required. Worn or bent shift forks. Replace defective shift forks. Gearshift mechanism is damaged. Replace or repair the mechanism.

Transmission oil leakage: Worn seals or gaskets. Gaskets or seal replacement required. Transmission fluid level is high. Correct the fluid level.

Ford 1920 Hydraulic System Troubleshooting

Hydraulic system is too hot: Wrong hydraulic fluid type. Pour the proper type of fluid. Dirty hydraulic fluid. The fluid must be changed. Air in hydraulic pipes. Bleed hydraulic pipes. Main relief valve malfunction. Install a new relief valve.

Low hydraulic fluid pressure: Hydraulic fluid is insufficient. Fill up the hydraulic fluid. Clogged hydraulic oil filter. Replace hydraulic filter element or service if necessary. Change or adjust bearings correctly. Front tyres are worn unevenly. Install new tyres.

Ford 1920 Electrical System Troubleshooting

Battery won’t charge: Electrical wire connections are corroded or loose. Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections. Electrical terminal connectors are faulty. Replace terminal connectors. Dead cell in battery. Battery change required. Loose or defective belt. Adjust belt tension or replace belt.

Starter turns slowly: Low battery voltage. Battery is drained, charge it. Battery won’t hold charge. Service charging system or replace battery. Disconnected battery cables or bad terminals. Check wiring and clean or replace terminals.
