John Deere 1025R, 1023E - Engine Oil and Filter

Check Oil Level

Check oil level before operating. Check oil level when JD 1025R, 1023E engine is cold and not running. Keep level between the Full and the Add marks. Shut off engine before adding oil. Check engine oil when engine is cold. If engine is warm, allow to cool for at least 5 minutes before checking oil. Check engine oil with the machine parked on a level surface. Park the machine safely. Remove dipstick, at the right side of the engine. Wipe with a clean cloth. Install dipstick. Remove dipstick. Check oil level on dipstick. Oil level should be between levels and on dipstick. If oil level is low: Raise hood. Remove right side panel. Remove oil fill cap. Add recommended engine oil until level is within operating range on dipstick. Do not overfill. Install dipstick. If oil is above LEVEL on dipstick, drain to the proper level. Install right side panel. Lower hood.

Change Oil and Filter

Run engine to warm the oil. Park machine safely. Place drain pan under oil drain plug located on under side of engine. Remove drain plug. Wipe dirt from around oil filter. Turn filter counterclockwise to remove. Put a light coat of clean engine oil on gasket of new filter. Install replacement oil filter by turning filter clockwise until gasket contacts filter base. Tighten additional one half turn. Install drain plug. Do not overtighten. Remove oil fill cap. Add engine oil. Engine Crankcase Oil Capacity - 2.7 L (2.9 qt). Install oil fill cap. Start and run engine at idle to check for leaks. Stop engine. Fix any leaks before operating. Check engine oil level. Add oil if necessary.

JD 1025R, 1023E - Air Filter

Clean Dust Unloading Valve

Park the machine safely. Allow engine to cool. Access the engine compartment. Squeeze dust unloading valve to clean. Remove and replace if damaged.

Service Primary Air Filter Element

Allow engine to cool. Raise hood. Remove hold down strap. Tilt up canister and release latches and remove canister cover. Remove and discard primary element. Clean out any dirt in canister, taking care not to damage secondary filter element. Replace with a new primary filter element. Install canister cover with rubber dust unloading valve pointing downward. Secure latches. Lower hood.

JD 1025R, 1023E - Service Secondary Air Filter Element

Remove canister cover. Remove and discard primary air filter element. Remove and discard secondary air filter element. Replace with a new secondary air filter element. Install new primary air filter element. Install canister cover. Position canister back in place and install strap. Lower hood.

Checking Air Filter Intake Hoses and Clamps

Visually inspect hose for cracks and wear. Check air intake hose. Tighten upper and lower clamps if necessary.

Replacing Fuel Filter

Close fuel shutoff valve. Inline fuel filter is located under the left foot deck. Position drain pan under the fuel filter. Wipe dirt from around filter. Clamp fuel line between filter and tank to prevent fuel draining from the fuel tank. Remove clamp that secures fuel filter to the foot deck. Remove two spring clamps. Remove old filter and install new filter. Install clamp around the fuel filter and secure to foot deck. Install two spring clamps. Remove clamp used between filter and tank. Start and run engine at idle to check for leaks.

JD 1025R, 1023E - Checking and Cleaning Sediment Bowl

Check fuel sediment bowl. If water and deposits are detected, remove bowl and replace fuel filter. Move the fuel shut-off valve to closed position. Position drain pan under fuel filter sediment bowl. Turn locking collar counterclockwise to remove bowl. Remove and discard the fuel filter. Clean bowl. Install new filter to filter head. Install sediment bowl and locking collar. Open fuel shut-off valve. Fuel system is self bleeding. Turn key to the ON position for 10-15 seconds before attempting to start, electric pump will purge air from sediment bowl.

Replacing Inline Fuel Filter

Change filter when fuel level is low. Inline fuel filter is located under left foot deck. Clamp fuel line between filter and tank to prevent fuel draining from fuel tank. Remove two spring clamps. Flow direction arrow on filter body should point away from tank. Remove old filter and install new filter. Replace two spring clamps. Remove clamp used between filter and tank. Check for leaks.

Check Coolant Level

Raise hood. Check coolant level in the recovery tank. If engine is at operating temperature, coolant level is at the FULL HOT line. If engine is cold, coolant level is at the FULL COLD line on the recovery tank. To add coolant, remove recovery tank cap. Add recommended coolant if needed. Install recovery tank cap. Lower hood.

Drain and Flush Cooling System

Shut off JD 1025R, 1023E engine. Only remove filler cap when cool enough to touch with bare hands. Slowly loosen cap to first stop to relieve pressure before removing completely. Allow engine to cool. Raise hood. Slowly open radiator cap to the first stop to release all pressure. Close radiator cap tightly. Position a pan under the radiator drain tube. Open the drain plug and allow the coolant to drain from the system. Remove the drain plug from the engine block and finish draining coolant. When coolant drains from the recovery tank, remove the radiator cap. Close radiator drain plug and install drain plug. Fill the cooling system with clean water. Run engine until water passes through the thermostat to stir up possible rust or sediment.

Stop engine immediately and drain water from the system before rust and sediment settles. Fill cooling system with clean water and John Deere Cooling System Cleaner, or Cooling System Quick Flush or an equivalent. Follow directions on the container. After cleaning the system, drain cleaner and fill the system with clean water to flush the system. Start and run engine until water passes through the thermostat. Stop engine, and drain flushing water from the system. Close all drain orifices and fill cooling system to specification. Cooling system capacity - 3.7 L (3.9 qt). Install radiator cap and run engine until it reaches operating temperature. Stop engine and check coolant level. Add coolant if necessary. Lower hood.

JD 1025R, 1023E - Fill Cooling System

Allow radiator to cool. Fill cooling system. Install and tighten radiator cap. Run engine until it reaches operating temperature. Stop engine. Check coolant level in the recovery tank and add coolant if necessary Lower hood.

Clean Radiator, Fuel, and Transmission Cooling Fins

Park machine safely. Allow engine to cool. Raise hood. Slide radiator screen up out of retaining slot. Clean screen with compressed air, brush, or cloth. Using compressed air or water, remove all dirt and debris from fins at front and rear of the following: Radiator, including fan shroud. Transmission oil cooler. Lower hood.

John Deere 1025R, 1023E - Alternator belt

Check Belt Tension

Park machine safely. Allow engine to cool. Raise hood. Remove left side panel. Check tension by using the belt tension gauge to apply pressure to the belt midway between pulleys at location. Belt should deflect 9 mm (3/8 in) at 75 lb (334 N). Adjust belt tension if not within specifications. Belt Tension Force - 75 lb (334 N). Belt Tension Inward Pressure - 9 mm (3/8 in)

Adjust Belt Tension

Loosen adjusting bolt and pivot bolt. Apply outward pressure to the alternator housing until tension is correct. Tighten bolts. Check belt tension. Install left side panel. Lower hood.

Replace Belt

Replace alternator belt if excessive wear, damage, or stretching is detected. Park machine safely. Allow engine to cool. Raise hood. Remove left side panel. Loosen adjusting bolt and pivot bolt. Apply inward pressure to the alternator housing. Remove belt from alternator pulley, fan pulley, and crankshaft pulley. Route belt over fan and remove. Install new belt over the fan and onto pulleys. Apply outward pressure to the alternator housing until tension is correct. Tighten bolts. Check belt tension. Adjust as necessary. Install left side panel. Lower hood.

John Deere 1025R, 1023E - Start the Engine

Move the transmission range-shift lever to the N position. Confirm the PTO/RIO switch is in the disengaged/off position. Lower any implements to the ground. Set the hand throttle to the 1/2-3/4 position. Turn the ignition key switch to the ON position and verify that all indicator lights and gauges are working: All indicator lights illuminate. All gauges do a full sweep and return to normal. Avoid damage to the starter! Operating the starter for more than 20 seconds at a time results in damage to the starter.

If the engine does not start, wait two minutes before trying again. Turn key switch to the START position. Release the key when the engine starts. Check the indicator lights: The oil pressure light turns off after 5 seconds of the engine running. If the light it does not turn off, the engine oil pressure is too low. Stop the engine and check for the cause. The alternator/battery charging light turns off after 10 seconds of the engine running. If it does not turn off, set the engine speed at full throttle. Run the engine at the 1/2 fast position for 1 minute without load.

Daily Startup Procedure

Test safety systems. Perform safety interlock system checkout procedure. Check engine oil level. Check / drain water separator. Check transmission fluid level. Check coolant level. Clean air intake screen and radiator screen. Check air filter elements and dust valve. Check wheel bolt torques. Check tire pressure. Check fuel level.
