John Deere 5090M, 5100M, 5115M Engine

Check Oil Level

Park machine on level ground and shut off engine. Remove key. Allow engine to cool. Remove engine oil fill cap/dipstick. Wipe off, fully reinsert the dipstick. Oil level must be between two marks on dipstick. If level is low, add oil through oil fill hole until even with the top mark on dipstick. Do not overfill. Replace oil fill cap before operating engine.



Change Oil and Filter

Operate engine to warm oil. Park machine on level ground and shut off engine. Remove key. Place a container under the drain port, capture waste oil and dispose of properly. Remove drain plug and allow oil to drain. Open hood. Remove engine oil filter. Make sure that old filter gasket is removed from housing before installing new filter. Apply a film of oil on the new oil filter gasket and install new filter. Hand-tighten plus 1/2 turn. Install drain plug. Add oil to fill. JD 5090M, 5100M, 5115M Tractor Engine Oil Capacity - 13 L (3.4 gal). Replace fill cap and/or dipstick. Start engine and inspect drain plug and filter for leaks. Stop engine and remove key. Recheck oil level on dipstick, add if necessary. Lower hood.

John Deere 5090M, 5100M, 5115M - Fan Belt

Check Fan Belt Tensioner

A belt tension gauge does not provide an accurate measurement of the belt tension. Measure tensioner spring tension using a torque wrench. Place machine in park and shut off engine. Remove key. Remove fan belt. Put a mark on the swing arm of the tensioner. Measure 21 mm (0.83 in) from and put a mark on tensioner mounting base. Rotate the swing arm using a torque wrench until marks are aligned. Pull tensioner with torque wrench away from engine. Record torque wrench measurement and compare with specification. Belt Tensioner Torque - 18-22 Nm (159-195 lb-in). Install fan belt.

Replace Fan Belt

Fan belt drive has an automatic tensioner which does not require adjustment. Place machine in park and shut off engine. Remove key. Release tension on belt using a long-handle 1/2 in drive breaker bar to pull the tensioner away from engine. Remove belt from alternator pulley. Release tension on tensioner and remove breaker bar. Unplug fan clutch. Remove locknut and flanged screw from wire harness support. Remove belt by bringing it over the wire harness support and cooling fan. Slip it between the fan blades and fan shroud. Install new belt in reverse order of removal. Install wire harness support with locknut and flanged bolt. Wire Harness Support Lock Nut Torque - 14 Nm (124 lb-in). Tighten to specification. Use breaker bar to push the tensioner into position for belt installation.

John Deere 5090M, 5100M, 5115M - Air Cleaner and Cooling

Change Open Crankcase Vent Filter (OCV)

Remove cap screws and remove OCV filter housing. Loosen clamps and remove hoses. JD 5090M, 5100M, 5115M Tractor: Unscrew filter housing and remove filter. Clean filter housing. Install new filter and reassemble filter housing. Reinstall hoses to the filter housing and tighten clamps. Reinstall filter housing and tighten cap screws to proper torque. Cap Screw Torque - 70 Nm (52 lb-ft).

Service Air Cleaner Elements

Dirty air cleaner element is indicated when air filter restricted indicator appears on the information display. Open hood. Remove latch and cover. Remove air cleaner element. If primary element does not pull out with ease, move side-to-side. When air cleaner element must be serviced in field, tap it on the palm of your hand. Do not use compressed air or filter damage occurs. Inspect guide ring for damage. Replace elements if core material or seals (both ends) are damaged, or if indicator remains illuminated. Install elements and reinstall latch cover. Lower hood.

Clean Grille Screens and Cooling Package

Park machine and shut off engine. Remove key. Remove trash buildup on the front grille as required. Raise hood. Slide the air conditioner condenser screen out toward the right side of the machine to remove. Loosen wing nut and slide the air conditioner condenser toward the left side of the machine until it hits the stop. Clean air conditioner condenser, screen, and fuel cooler with compressed air. If a more thorough cleaning is required perform the following. Loosen wing nuts on each side of the charge air cooler and pivot forward.

Tighten wing nuts to retain position. Pull handle of the hydraulic oil cooler toward to left side of the machine until it hits the stop. Clean charge air cooler, hydraulic oil cooler, and radiator with compressed air. Straighten any bent fins. Return coolers, condenser, and screen back to original position and tighten wing nuts to secure in place. Verify that hydraulic oil cooler hoses are under the protective shield. Verify that all lines are not pinched or kinked when coolers are repositioned. Lower hood.

John Deere 5090M, 5100M, 5115M Fuel System

Bleed Fuel System

Park machine on level ground. Remove key. Check fuel level. Add if necessary. Raise hood and locate primary fuel filter on the right-hand side of machine. Loosen filter housing bleed screw. Capture the discharge waste and dispose of properly. Push priming mechanism at the transfer pump until all air is purged and fuel runs out smoothly from bleed screw. Tighten bleed screw. Lower hood.

Drain Water and Sediment from Fuel Filter

Place a suitable sized container under the fuel drain locations (filters, water separator, and tanks). Dispose of waste properly. Park machine on level ground and shut off engine. Remove key. Raise hood and locate primary fuel filter on the right-hand side of machine. Open water separator drain valve to bleed accumulated water and sediment from filter. Close when clear fuel runs from the drain valve. Run engine for minimum of 20 seconds and check water separator drain valve again for water and sediment. If moisture or sediment is present, drain fuel tank. Open fuel tank drain plug to bleed accumulated moisture and sediment from the fuel tank. Apply Teflon tape or equivalent to threads of the drain plug. Tighten plug when clear fuel runs from the fuel tank drain. Replace and tighten. Lower hood.

JD 5090M, 5100M, 5115M - Replace Fuel Filters

Change Every 500 Hour. The fuel filters are different, do not interchange. Replace one after another to avoid interchange. Place machine in park, turn off engine, and remove key. Allow engine to cool. Raise hood. Disconnect water-in-fuel sensor on the bottom of the primary fuel filter on the right-hand side of the engine. Open drain valve on water separator bowl assembly of the primary fuel filter. Drain fuel. Capture the discharge waste and dispose of properly. Remove primary filter from the fuel filter housing by turning counterclockwise. Remove water separator bowl assembly from the primary fuel filter. Clean water separator bowl. Dry with compressed air. Install new seals (supplied with the new filter) on the water separator bowl and drain valve.

Install water separator assembly on the new primary fuel filter. Fill filters with clean diesel fuel before installing on engine. Apply a small amount of clean oil on the primary fuel filter gasket. Do not use a filter wrench when tightening filters. Hand tighten filter only. Install new primary fuel filter assembly. Connect water-in-fuel sensor. Remove secondary fuel filter on the left-hand side of the engine from the filter housing by turning counterclockwise. Apply a small amount of clean oil on the new secondary fuel filter gasket. Install new secondary fuel filter. Bleed the fuel system. Start engine and run until warm. Turn off engine and remove key. Inspect drain valve and filters for leaks. Lower hood.

Check Transmission Park System

Depress clutch pedal and brake pedals. Place transmission shift lever in Park position. If equipped with reverser, place reverser lever in Neutral position. Release the clutch and brake pedals. Wait 10-15 seconds, watching for movement.

Check Transmission-Hydraulic System Oil Level

Weekly or 50 Hour. Park machine on level ground, lower hitch, and other hydraulic implements. Shut off engine. Remove key. Let oil settle for a minimum of five minutes. Check level at the mark on dipstick. Level must be at the full oil level mark. Remove oil fill cap, and add transmission oil to the fill port if level is low.

JD 5090M, 5100M, 5115M - Change Transmission-Hydraulic Filter

Capture oil from filter using a drain pan. Dispose of waste oil properly. Park machine on level ground and shut off engine. Remove key. Remove transmission oil fill cap and use a shop-vac to apply suction to the fill port to prevent excessive draining of hydraulic fluid. Remove transmission-hydraulic filter from the filter base. Clean threads on the filter base and on new filter. Do not over tighten filter. Apply oil to the new filter seal and install filter. Tighten filter by hand, then tighten an additional 1/8 turn. Check oil level with dipstick. If level is low, remove transmission oil fill cap and add transmission-hydraulic oil as necessary to fill system. Recheck oil level after five minutes of operation.

Change Transmission-Hydraulic Oil and Filter

Lower rear hitch to remove trapped oil. Remove transmission drain plug. Remove transmission hydraulic oil filter from the filter base. Clean threads on the filter base and on the new transmission hydraulic oil filter with clean transmission-hydraulic oil. Do not over tighten filter. Apply oil to the new transmission hydraulic oil filter seal and install transmission hydraulic oil filter. Tighten transmission hydraulic oil filter by hand, then tighten an additional 1/8 turn. Install transmission drain plug. Remove oil fill cap and fill oil. Transmission Oil Capacity - 39.4 L (10.4 gal). Check oil level with dipstick and again after five minutes of operation.
