Starting the Engine with Hydrostatic
Transmission
If attempting to restart the 4044M, 4044R, 4052M, 4052R, 4066M, 4066R
John Deere tractors engine after a stall, wait at least 2 seconds before
restarting.
Move the machine to an outside area before running the engine.
Do not run an engine in an enclosed area without adequate ventilation.
Connect a pipe extension to the engine exhaust pipe to direct the
exhaust fumes out of the area.
Allow fresh outside air into the work area to clear out the exhaust
fumes.
It is recommended to install optional engine block heater, hydraulic oil
heater, and battery heating pad if operating machine in temperatures
below -18C (0F).
If temperature is below 0C (32F), follow the cold weather starting steps
in this section.
- Apply park brake.
- Move the transmission range shift lever to the N (neutral) position.
- Make sure PTO switch is in the off position.
- Remove foot from forward and reverse travel pedals.
- Check to be sure that area is clear of any bystanders before lowering
implements to the ground. Lower any rear-mounted implement to the ground
by pushing the
rockshaft control lever forward.
- Lower any front-mounted implement to the ground using the SCV lever
(if equipped).
- Set hand throttle to the 1/2-3/4 fast position.
- Turn key switch to the run position.
- Check instrument panel indicator lights: Alternator/battery charging
light illuminates. Engine oil pressure light illuminates. Glow plugs and
air heater are operational
during cranking. Using ether or starter fluid during cranking will cause
damage to engine.
- Turn key switch to the start position to start engine. Release the key
after the 4044, 4052, 4066 John Deere tractors engine has started.
- Check indicator lights: Engine oil pressure light goes out within 5
seconds. If indicator light does not go out after 10 seconds, set engine
speed at full throttle.
Alternator charging light should go out within 10 seconds. If indicator
lights stay on longer than the given time interval, stop engine and
check for cause.
- Set hand throttle to the 1/2 fast position for 1 minute without load.
Cold Weather Starting
- Apply park brake.
- Move the JD tractor transmission range shift lever to the N (neutral)
position.
- Turn key switch to the run position.
- When glow plug icon light turns off, turn key to the start position.
Starter may be damaged if starter is operated for more than 20 seconds
at a time. Wait 2 minutes
before trying again if engine does not start.
- Release key when engine starts.
- Check instrument panel indicator lights: Engine oil pressure light
will go out within 5 seconds. Alternator/battery charging light will go
out within 10 seconds.
- If indicator light remains on after 10 seconds, set engine speed to
full throttle. If indicator light continues to stay on, stop the engine
and check for cause.
- Warm the engine: In warm weather, set hand throttle to the 1/2 fast
position for 1 minute without load. In cold weather, set hand throttle
to the 1/2 fast position for 5
minutes without load.
Idling Engine
Allowing engine to idle for long periods of time wastes fuel and cause
carbon buildup.
- Adjust hand throttle to set engine at low idle.
- Apply park brake.
Starting a Stalled JD 4044M, 4044R, 4052M, 4052R, 4066M, 4066R Engine
- Disengage PTO.
- Remove foot from forward and reverse travel pedals.
- Move transmission range shift lever to the N (neutral) position.
- Start engine. Continue with normal operation, or set engine at low
idle for 2 minutes before stopping engine.
