John Deere 5420 Periodic Maintenance

Every Ten Hours or Daily Inspection

Engine oil level checking. If the oil level is too low, fill in new oil.

Check transmission/hydraulic oil level. When the transmission/hydraulic fluid is low, add fresh oil.

Engine air filters checking. Replace with a new one if necessary.

Check coolant level in radiator. If the coolant level is too low, fill the system.

Check engine idle speed, steering, service brakes and hand brake. Repair any malfunctions if necessary.

Oil Change And Filter Replacement

Every 250 hours

Change engine oil. Recommended motor oil type - Plus-50, SAE 15W-40, 10W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40. API Service Category CH-4, CG-4, CF-4. How much to add: Engine Oil Capacity - 8.5 L (2.2 gal). After filling, check the engine oil level with a dipstick.

Change engine oil filter. Oil filter part number: RE59754. When replace the filter, flushing the housing is necessary. When installation is complete, check the oil level. If after checking the oil level is low, add it.

Replace hydraulic/transmission oil filter. Hydraulic/transmission filter element part number: RE45864. When installation is complete, check the hydraulic/transmission fluid level. Add fluid if required.

Check cab recirculation air filter. Clean if necessary. Cab air filter part number - RE73220/RE195491.

Inspect cab fresh air filter. Service as required. Part number - RE198488.

Engine primary air filter checking. Clean as required. Engine primary air filter part number: AT171853.

Inspect engine secondary air filter. Change as required. Part number - AT171854.

Every 500 hours

Replace engine fuel filter. Fuel filter part number - RE60021. Check the correct operation of diesel fuel pump.

Check in-line fuel strainer. Replace as required. Part number - RE220719.

Change front axle fluid. Front Axle Oil Capacity - 6.2 L (1.6 gal). Front axle oil - GL-5.

Every 1200 hours

Changing hydraulic/transmission oil. Recommended oil - Hy-Gard, JDM J20C or J20D. Transmission and Hydraulic System Capacity: Dry Clutch (CollarShift and SyncShuttle) - 38 L (10 gal), Wet Clutch (PowrReverser) - 43.5 L (11.5 gal). When the procedure is complete, check the hydraulic/transmission fluid level.

Change filter and engine oil. Service oil system components.

Replace engine primary and secondary air cleaners.

Install a new transmission/hydraulic filter.

Change transmission/hydraulic fluid.

Change cab fresh air filter.

Replace cab recirculation air filter.

Drain water from fuel tank and change fuel filters.

Clean oil cooler fins and radiator.

Flush the cooling system and add new coolant. Cooling System Capacity - 10.8 L (2.8 gal).

Check all hoses and clamps.

Check battery electrolyte level.

Adjust engine valve clearance.

Inspect and adjust fuel injection nozzle.
