Massey Ferguson tractors - Carraro front axle troubleshooting
Ring gear teeth damaged on external side
Excessive load on teeth in relation to design load. Incorrect backlash
(excessive clearance). Loosening of the pinion nut. Replace the ring
gear and pinion. Carefully follow the recommended adjustment operations
for bevel gear clearance.
Ring gear teeth damaged on internal side
Jerky load. Incorrect shimming of teeth (insufficient clearance).
Loosening of the pinion nut. Replace the ring gear and pinion. Carefully
follow the recommended adjustment operations for bevel gear clearance.
Ring gear teeth and pinion teeth worn or
damaged
Insufficient lubrication. Contaminated fluid. Lubrication incorrect or
containing diluting additives. Pinion pin clearance misadjusted and poor
contact between pinion and ring gear caused by wear to the pinion
bearings. Replace the ring gear and pinion. Replace the bearings,
ensuring the correct positioning of the ring gear, pinion and bearings
preloads. Use suitable lubricants, top up level when required and change
the lubricant as indicated in the recommended maintenance schedule.
Ring gear teeth and pinion teeth overheated
Check that the teeth have not lost their colouring. Prolonged operation
at excessive temperatures. Incorrect lubrication. Low oil level.
Contaminated fluid. Replace the ring gear and pinion. Use suitable
lubricants, top up level when required and change the lubricant as
indicated in the recommended maintenance schedule.
Pinion teeth corroded
Excessive use. Insufficient lubrication. Replace the ring gear and
pinion. Use suitable lubricants, top up level when required and change
the lubricant as indicated in the recommended maintenance schedule.
Carraro front axle beam warped
Vehicle overload. Vehicle accident. Jerky load. Replace axle beam.
Bearings worn or corroded
Insufficient lubrication. Contaminated fluid. Excessive use. Normal use.
Loosening of the pinion nut. Replace the bearings. Use suitable
lubricants, top up level when required and change the lubricant as
indicated in the recommended maintenance schedule.
Oil leak at seals
Prolonged use at excessive oil temperature. Incorrect assembly of oil
seal. Damaged lip seal. Contaminated fluid. Replace the seal and mating
surface if damaged. Use suitable lubricants, top up level when required
and change the lubricant as indicated in the recommended maintenance
schedule.
Input flange splines excessively worn
Excessive use. Loosening of the pinion nut. Pinion shaft clearance.
Replace the flange. Check the wear on pinion splines. If necessary
replace the ring gear and pinion.
Pinion teeth broken due to fatigue
Check if the rupture is straight (jagged). Excessive use. Prolonged
overload. Replace the ring gear and pinion.
Pinion teeth and ring gear teeth broken
Differential parts at breaking load. Check and replace other
differential parts if necessary.
Pinion splines of sun gear excessively worn
(excessive backlash)
Excessive use. Replace the pinions throughout the differential. If
necessary, replace the stub axle.
Thrust washer mating surface worn or scratched
Insufficient lubrication. Incorrect lubrication. Contaminated fluid.
Replace with a new washer if scratched or if thickness is under 0.1 mm.
Use suitable lubricants, top up level when required and change the
lubricant as indicated in the recommended maintenance schedule.
Taper roller bearing internal diameter worn
Excessive use. Excessive pinion axial clearance. Insufficient
lubrication. Contaminated fluid. Replace bearing. Check pinion axial
clearance. Use suitable lubricants, top up level when required and
change the lubricant as indicated in the recommended maintenance
schedule.
Stub axle warped or broken
Excessive use or vehicle overload. Replace the defective stub axle.
Stub axle broken at wheel side
Wheel support loose. Axle beam warped. Replace the defective stub axle.
Ensure that the Carraro front axle beam is not warped. Ensure that the
wheel support is not worn or misadjusted.
Carraro front axle - Problem identification and diagnostics
Problem - Noise when vehicle is moving
Excessive backlash between the ring gear and pinion - Adjust backlash.
Ring gear or pinion worn - Replace the defective component. Pinion
bearings worn - Replace the bearings. Pinion bearings loose - Adjust the
bearings. Excessive pinion axial clearance - Adjust backlash.
Differential bearings worn - Replace the bearings. Differential bearings
loose - Adjust the bearings. Excessive ring gear out-of-round - Replace
the ring gear. Hydraulic fluid low - Top up level. Insufficient or
incorrect grade lubricant - Change lubricant. Stub axle warped - Replace
the stub axle.
Problem - Noise when engine is in neutral position
Noises caused by the axle can generally be heard faintly when the engine
is in neutral position - Adjust or replace. Incorrect backlash between
the pinion and ring gear (the noise can be heard at the end of
deceleration, when the engine starts to accelerate) - Adjust backlash.
Input flange or pinion excessively worn - Replace defective parts.
Problem - Intermittent noise
Ring gear damaged - Replace the bevel gear. Differential unit bolts
loose - Tighten to the required torque
Problem - Continuous noise
Ring gear or pinion damaged. Replace the bevel gear. Bearings worn.
Replace the bearings. Pinion splines worn. Replace the pinion. Stub axle
warped. Replace the stub axle.
Problem - Noise when changing steering angle
Differential pinion gears worn. Replace the pinion gears. Differential
unit and / or spider worn. Replace defective components. Differential
thrust washers worn. Replace the bearings. Stub axle splines worn.
Replace the stub axle.
