John Deere E160 Engine Troubleshooting

Engine fails to start

Gas tank is empty - Add fuel.
Incorrect fuel grade - Use correct gasoline grade.
Old gas - Drain fuel and fill up fresh.
Clogged fuel system - Remove clogging.
Defective spark plug wires - Check wires connection.
Spark plug not working - Installing new spark plug.
Dirty fuel filter - Install new filter.
Brake pedal not pushed down - Push the brake pedal down.

Low octane fuel - Change fuel.
Engine overload - Reduce loads.
Lack of engine oil - add oil as required.
Engine runs at low revs - Adjust carburetor.

Starter motor will not turn engine

Blown main fuse - Check and replace.
Battery contacts are corroded - Clean contacts.

Battery does not charge

One or more battery cells dead - Replace the battery.

Debris in mower deck - Inspect and clean cutting deck.
Blade wornout - Check and replace the blade.
Mower deck low - Level mower deck.
Grass bag overfilled - Empty bagger.
Ground speed too fast - Need to reduce speed.

Slipping drive belt

Debris in sheaves - Need to clean the pulley.

Mower vibrates

Debris in pulleys or in mower deck - Remove debris from the pulley or deck.
Worn belt or pulley - Replace damaged parts.

Blade strips grass

Cutting height incorrect - Check and adjust height.
