Tractor engine starting problems

Empty fuel tank - Add fuel.
Improper fuel grade - Change gasoline.
Stale fuel - Drain gasoline and change with fresh.
Air or water in fuel system - Remove water or air from fuel system.
Plug connection defective - Inspect and change if necessary.
Faulty spark plug - Spark plugs need to be replaced.
Plugged fuel filter - Replace fuel filter.
Faulty safety switch - Change damaged switch.
Carburetor is not adjusted - Check carburetor float adjustment.
Check starter cranking RPM. Test crankcase vacuum.

Engine starts hard

Spark plug worn out - Test spark and replace as required.

Check connecting rod to crankshaft bearing clearance.
Fast idle speed - Adjusting fast idle speed.

Engine will not idle

Spark plug not gapped correctly - Check tightness of spark plug.
Faulty spark plug - Test spark and replace as required.

Engine knocks

Stale fuel - Use correct gasoline.
Excessive engine load - Reduce the load.
Oil level low - add oil as required.
Engine speed too low - Adjust carburetor as needed.
Cylinder bore or piston rings are damaged - Replace damaged parts.
Check for engine overheating from plugged cooling fins.
Check and adjust valve clearance.
Check for worn crankshaft or camshaft bearings.

Engine backfires

Check spark plug for fouled.
Adjust or replace choke.
Check and adjust carburetor.

Inspect for sticking valves.
Checking and adjusting valve clearance.
Inspect flywheel key.

Engine loses power

Engine overheating - Air cleaner element plugged.

Engine getting too much fuel

Inspect carburetor needle valve and seat for wear or damage.

Starter motor will not turn engine

Blown fuse - Installing new fuse.
Battery contacts are corroded - Clean terminals.
Weak battery - Battery charging required.
Ignition switch is damaged - Install new switch.
Faulty starter - Change the starter.
Wires disconnected - Replace electric wires.

Battery will not charge

One or more battery cells dead - Install new battery.
Battery terminals and cables are dirty - Change or clean cable.

No Lights work

Headlight wire connector disconnected.
Replace the lamps.
Inspect electrical wires for short- circuit.

JD GT235 Machine Problems

Tractor vibrates too much or rattles excessively

Attachment driven belt worn or damaged - Check and replace worn belt.
Worn traction drive belt - Check and replace belt.
Drive pulley is dirty - Change if necessary.
Cutting blade loose or unbalanced - Change damaged blades.

The engine is running but tractor is not moving

The parking brake is locked - Release the park brake.
Bypass lever is on - Set bypass valve to the off position.
Mower blade could be loose - Fasten the blades securely.
Blades are unbalanced - Balance the blades correctly.
Too much or too little oil - Check transmission oil lever.

Plugged discharge chute

Speed too high - Use slower speed.
Grass Too Tall - Adjusting cutting height.
Wet grass - Wait until later to cut.
Engine rpm too low - Adjust carburetor to higher rpm.
Loss of airflow - Set higher revs.
Low cutting height - Choose the correct cutting height.
Belt installed improperly - Install the belt correctly.

Uncut grass during operation

Mower deck clogged - Deck cleaning required.
Blade wornout - Check and replace the blade.
Deck level is too low - Leveling the mower deck.
Grass bag overfilled - Empty bagger.
Traveling too fast - Operate the mower at low speed.

Belt slips

Debris in pulleys - Check and clean.
Worn belt - Check and replace belt.
Belt tension improper - Check and adjusting belt tension.

Mower vibrates

Mower clogged or in pulleys - Clean deck and pulley from debris.
Damaged pulleys or belt - Change defective components.
Belt or pulleys no adjustment - Check and adjust.
No blade balance adjustment - Adjust blade balance.

Blades scalping grass

Wrong cutting height - adjust cutting height.
Mower height wheels not adjusted - Adjust rear or front wheel height.
Tires inflated insufficient - Tire pressure required.
High blade speed during mowing - Balance mower speed.
Bent mower blades - Remove bent blade and install new one.

Uneven cutting results

Deck too low - Checking and adjust deck height.
Tire pressure uneven - Increase tire pressure.
Incorrect wheel height - Adjust rear or front wheel height.
Gear too high - Choose recommended speed.
Mower blade bent or worn - Inspect and fit new blade if required.
